5 Ways to Refresh Your Home After the Holidays

Now that the holidays are behind us and all the decorations are taken down, our homes might look a bit bare. So now is the perfect time to rethink your space and give it that winter refresh it deserves. Here are 5 simple ways to refresh your home to make it feel fresh, inviting, and renewed.

Elevate the Entryway

Don’t neglect your entryway! It’s the first introduction to the home — so it needs to be functional, stylish, and of course, clutter-free. A quick and easy way to give it a winter refresh is by adding a brand new floor mat. Not only will it feel welcoming to your guests, but it will also catch any debris so dirt doesn’t get tracked into the house. If you’re not looking to spend any money, you can swap the mats from the back door to the front door. A runner will look best in a long entryway, while a small rectangular mat will fit better in tight spaces.

And if you want to make old furniture feel new, try moving it to a different room. For example, you can use an old sideboard or buffet as your new entryway table. Feel free to style it with an accent lamp or a house plant!

Cozy Up the Living Room

Don’t you just want to curl up on the couch all the time during the winter? Make sure to keep your living room feeling comfy and cozy — even after the Christmas tree is taken down. You can start by rearranging your living room furniture. If your sofa is already up against the wall, try floating the furniture in the middle of the room along with your accent chairs and coffee table, or vice versa.

You can also use decorative throw pillows and blankets to add color and texture to the space. And if you have extra tables or floor lamps floating around the house, try adding them here, too. This is a great way to add layers of lighting to your space — making it feel bright and inviting.

Now is the perfect time to go through your family photos and get them framed! My team and I created this beautiful gallery wall going up the stairs for one of our client’s homes. I love the look of identical frames with an oversized white mat. You can also make a statement with your gallery wall by using thin black frames and black and white photos.

Revamp the Bedroom

During the winter months, we might find ourselves hiding out in the bedroom a little more than usual, so having additional seating will make it an even better place to unwind and relax! If you don’t have the space for a separate seating area, you can add a bench or small loveseat to the end of your bed!

This master bedroom features a woven bench with a decorative throw. Feel free to bring some color and texture to the space by mixing and matching throws and pillows.

Organize and Donate

Sometimes we end up holding on to things we no longer need just because we’ve spent money on it or loved it at some point. It’s just hard to let go of things! The new year is a great time to get rid of the items in our homes that no longer serve us. Take the time this month to really go through your home and declutter what you’ve been holding on to the past few years. Whether they’re clothes that don’t fit, furniture that’s no longer your style, or other miscellaneous household items, you can bring them to a donation center or give it away for free on Facebook Marketplace if it’s in good condition.

Once you’ve decluttered, you can focus on organizing your closets and cabinets in a way where you can see and easily access all your items. Don’t overwhelm yourself: Start small with kitchen drawers and linen closets. Then, move on to the bigger projects like your garage or basement.

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to refresh your home. Whether you’ve decided to move around your furniture or clean out your closets, it’s all about making your home feel new and inviting.
